The 3rd international field symposium: science, technology and disaster mitigation
The year 2010 is the 50 year anniversary of the 1960 Chilean Tsunami generated by a giant earthquake offshore Chile (M=9.5), which caused severe damage in many countries along the Pacific Ocean. After the tsunami, understanding of tsunami generation mechanisms, development of international warning systems, and integrated management became important issues in high-tsunami-risk countries for future disaster mitigation. Since then, tsunami-related science and technology have been developed to overcome those issues and have contributed to producing safe societies.
However, similar tragedies such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, have been repeated in different areas of the world. Now is the time to share data, experiences, and tsunami-associated issues for disaster mitigation against future tsunamis.
The major topics of the symposium are the following:
-Science:
Tectonophysics, impact to marine and coastal ecosystem, sedimentology, and geomorphology .
-Technology:
Modelling and assessing hazards, damage estimation and detection, remote sensing, and GIS .
-Disaster Mitigation:
Structural and non-structural countermeasures, disaster information, and risk evaluation, awareness, and education.
