Description

CUIDAR (Cultures of Disaster Resilience Among Children and Young People) is a European wide project aiming to enhance the resilience of children, young people and urban societies to disasters and enable disaster responders to meet children and young people’s needs more effectively. It is funded by the European Union and coordinated by Lancaster University (UK), with the collaboration of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Portugal), the Open University of Catalonia (Spain), the University of Thessaly (Greece) and Save the Children, Italy and UK.

CUIDAR’s objectives are:

• To better understand the risk perception, disaster needs and capacities of children and young people in urban societies.
• To strengthen children’s understanding of emergencies and the actions they can take to prepare themselves, their families and their communities.
• Increased awareness and understanding amongst disaster responders and policy makers of children and young people’s needs in disasters.
• More effective communication between disaster responders and children and young people in urban contexts.
• Improved disaster management framework, policies and practices that take into account the particular needs of children and young people in urban disasters.

This final event will show the project’s main findings to an international audience of decision-makers, practitioners and researchers. Participants will experience and discuss the main outcome from the project - a child-centred disaster management framework for Europe, which will help those working in the field engage with children and young people in emergencies. Children and young people who participated in CUIDAR’s activities will be actively engaged during the event.

Attendance to the event is free of charge but participants must register at the event .

Have you been running a project about disaster risk reduction, public understanding of disaster/hazard warnings and/or the perspectives of children and young people that you’d like to tell us about? We will have a poster session at our event where you can speak with participants and hear about other initiatives.
