International day for disaster reduction and cross visit
By resolution 64/200 of 21 December 2009 the United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 13 October as the date to commemorate the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR). IDRR is intended to increase community awareness in reducing disaster risks. As actors actively promoting Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) issues, the Garut District Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) intend to hold an event for "International Day for Disaster Reduction and Cross Visit". In line with the theme of 2011 International Day for Disaster Reduction : “Making Children and Young People Partners for Disaster Risk Reduction", there will be a specific focus on involvement of children and youth in making communities better prepared for potential hazards.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), funded by Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission (DIPECHO) since June 2010 and the Australia - Indonesia Facility for Disaster Reduction (AIFDR) since October 2011, has been implementing a project entitiled "Improving Preparedness and Disaster Response Capacity in Garut district, West Java ".
The event will be conducted on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 08.00 AM – 15.00 PM where it includes students competition on hazard mapping and DRR poster development, Launching of the DRR Forum, Launching of the hazards maps , DRR Exhibition as well as different public performances which promotes risk reduction messages. In conjuction with the IDDR commemoration, BPBD Garut and IOM will also organize cross visit involving CBDMGs, related government offices and other various stakeholders in DRR such as local media and NGOs operating in the vicinity of Garut district.
This activity is aimed to enable the DRR stakeholders to coordinate, encourage each other, and share knowledge and information in promoting actions to reduce disaster risk to the community
