Managing risk and building resilience

Faced with climate change and variability, stakeholders need to address in an integrated way the concerns which are common to both the fields of adaptation and disaster risk reduction. In doing so, key priorities for sustainable development can be identified.

Simply reducing the uncertainty of meteorological predictions cannot fully support preparedness without strongly appreciating the global trends of population increase and its associated land and water use changes. Being forced to embrace uncertainty and complexity, stakeholders urgently need to develop effective strategies for change processes.

Course objectives

This course aims to enhance capacity for coping with natural disasters, improving resilience and disaster preparedness, using adaptation to climate change as an entry point.

Topics covered are disaster risk reduction, risk management, vulnerability, resilience, climate change adaptation, multi-stakeholder processes and policy. The training programme incorporates interactive lectures, discussions, group work, case studies, presentations, field visits and excursions.
