Workshop: Reducing environmental risks naturally - Guidance for IUCN's disaster risk reduction
Since 2006, IUCN’s Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) has actively raised awareness about the role of ecosystems, or natural infrastructure, as a cost-effective strategy for reducing the magnitude of hazard events and protecting livelihoods.
Many conservation projects already include risk-reducing strategies but others could do more to integrate Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) safeguards and ensure more effective project outcomes. Examples of such integrated approaches include combining coastal restoration with disaster preparedness and livelihood diversification, making space for water through wetlands restoration and early warning, responding to oil spills and more natural hazards through greener recovery strategies.
This workshop will present a set of recommendations for IUCN and CEM’s future work in this field. Existing resources will be presented including publications, training course and websites that highlight the ecosystem approach to disaster risk reduction. This workshop is on how to prepare for and recover from disasters using ecosystem based management approaches and is highly relevant to the World Conservation Congress theme, Nature +.
