The Lami Town Council held its first multi- stakeholder meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) at the Lami Town Council Chambers yesterday.
Based on the Council’s achievements in implementing DRR, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) invited Lami to participate in the pilot phase of the Local Government Self Assessment Tool (LG-SAT) .
In total, 25 cities around the world will test the LG-SAT.
Using the tool, the local governments can self assess their progress in the implementation of disaster risk reduction at the local level.
The tool helps to identify gaps and challenges, and to guide for future planning.
The stakeholders comprised of personnel from the Ministry of Local Government, rate payers of Lami, business community, women’s group, informal settlement leaders , the Lami Police, the Lami Crime Free Committee, schools and others.
The chief executive of the Lami Town Council, Ms Preeya Ieli said they anticipate the stakeholder committee to increase in numbers so that a complete representation from the national, local and community level is involved in strategizing Lami’s DRR plans.
