Heat-related deaths in Perth could rise almost 60 per cent by 2050 if temperatures keep rising
- A study commissioned by the WA Department of Health examined heat-related impacts on health in Perth amid rising global temperatures.
- It forecast steep rises in both deaths and hospital admissions by 2050 should temperatures continue to rise.
- Health experts want the government to do more to combat climate change in order to avoid the worst-case scenario.
Heat-related deaths will jump more than 60 per cent by 2050 if temperatures continue to climb, according to modelling done for the WA Department of Health.
The analysis looked at heat-related impacts on health in Perth amid rising global temperatures caused by climate change.
It predicted heat-related emergency department admissions will climb by almost 30 per cent over the same period, at an increased cost to the public purse of $30 million per year.
"[This] poses a concerning finding, considering bed occupancy are at limits already at Perth hospitals," the report stated.
