Japan: Gaps found in disaster readiness plans following tsunami warnings

According to the Mainichi Daily News, out of the 82,291 people in 12 towns and cities along the coast of the Iwate Prefecture, that were ordered to evacuate after the tsunami alert last weekend following the Chilean earthquake, only 7,000 were relocated.

The news agency revealed that large numbers of people refused to evacuate and there was difficulty in handling those vulnerable to disasters, such as elderly people living alone and people with disabilities.

A total of 82,291 people in 12 towns and cities along the coast were ordered to evacuate, . But by 4 p.m. on Sunday, just 7,000 had been relocated.
