Philippines: Antique town activates Local Disaster Risk Reduction Council

San Jose, Antique - In compliance with the implementation of Republic Act 10121 of the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction Council Act of 2010, the Municipality of San Jose de Buenavista activated its Municipal and Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Council (DRRMC) .

Mayor Rony Molina of San Jose in his message during the orientation on RA 10121 and planning workshop of Local Disaster Risk and Reduction Council said that we may not always experience disasters but the barangay should be ready on what to do when calamities or disaster occur.

It is important for barangays, Molina said to invest their time and resources to disaster preparedness and mitigation to protect people’s lives.

The orientation and planning workshop facilitated by the Municipal Disaster Risk and Reduction Council also dicussed the membership and functions of the DRRMC.

San Jose de Buenavista Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council (MDCC), now MDRRM Council, was awarded first place in the National Gawad Kalasag Award after it was awarded as Best MDCC for the 1st – 3rd Class Municipality category in Region VI in 2010.

According to the National DRRM Council, San Jose de Buenavista MDCC topped all other contenders for Best MDCC 1st—3rd Class category for implementing both structural and non-structural components in all phases of disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM).

It made possible through the good leadership and governance of the MDCC networking with partner organizations, implementing an internationally known program for the protection and well-being of persons with disabilities, occupational safety and health of its employees, giving emphasis on the preventive health program, gender and development, and the provision of humane conditions in the environment and workplace.
