Makati - The local government hosted the launching in the Philippines of the “Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready!” campaign, a global movement spearheaded by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) at the East Rembo Elementary School Friday morning.

Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay, who was among the 13 mayors invited from the National Capital Region and the Alliance of Seven, formally pledged the city's commitment to the "Ten Essential Actions to Reduce Disaster Risks" set by the UN to serve as their main objectives under the campaign.

Binay said the campaign is very timely because cities are not exempt from the adverse effect of climate change.

“The mayors of Metro Manila have joined hands in finding solutions to make our cities and municipalities resilient to climate change. As leaders, we have to be proactive in our approach so that great destruction would not come upon us,” he said.

The event has been organized in coordination with the office of Senator Loren Legarda, chair of the Senate Committee on Climate Change.

“We cannot ignore what is happening to any one of the localities in the National Capital Region because we are contiguous territories and any environmental disaster in one will surely affect the rest. We have to muster our resources, knowledge and available technology so that we can minimize the impact of climate change upon us,” the mayor said.

Meanwhile, among the mayors expected to pledge their own commitment include Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Caloocan Mayor Enrico Echiverri, Valenzuela Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian, Pasay Mayor Antonino Calixto, San Juan Mayor Guia Gomez, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista, Taguig Mayor Maria Laarni Cayetano, Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman, Antipolo Mayor Danilo Leyble, Cainta Mayor Ramon Ilagan, Rodriguez, Rizal Mayor Cecilio Hernandez, and San Mateo, Rizal Mayor Jose Rafael Diaz.
