Philippines: St. Bernard's flood early warning system among good practices
PIA press release by ES Gorne
Southern Leyte - The disaster stricken municipality, St. Bernard who initiated the flood early warning system to address frequent flooding of the area due to frequent heavy rainfall of the area was pushed by Oxfam as among the good practices worthy to be replicated.
Oxfam, an international humanitarian organization, spearheaded a sharing session on the good practices on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) , the Office of the Civil Defense based in Southern Leyte Provincial Coordinator Marichu Tan, who was among the presenter during the said activity.
The flood early warning system provides enough time or lead-time between critical warning and completion of evacuation for the protection of lives and properties.
Early this year, thousands of families evacuated to safety as heavy, consistent rainfall caused massive flooding in the municipality with the aid of the early warning systems that have saved lives by early evacuation due to the establishment of early warning system, it was learned.
Oxfam wanted to encourage local government units who are frequently flooded to replicate the system.
The practice aims to provide early warning to the people authorities of any threat of floods/flashfloods and landslides, give enough time or lead time between critical warning and completion of evacuation to save lives and property and to develop a well prepared capacitated community.
In line with the project entitled “Improving Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Management Systems In The Philippines To Create A Safer Environment For Men And Women In Vulnerable Communities,” Oxfam initiates the sharing of good practices on DRR and CCA in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte early last month.
