'Back to nature' cuts flood risks

This BBC News article presents a study published in Science which asserts that reconnecting flood-plains to rivers and allowing these areas to be submerged during storms would reduce the risk of flood damage in nearby urban areas.

Scientists warn against likely increasing risks of flooding as a result of climate change and shifts in land use, i.e. building construction in flood-prone areas. They advocate for "functional floodplains" that would mitigate flood risk, increase goods and services provided by floodplains, and provide additional resiliency to potential climate-change impacts.
