The Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Centre (UPDRRC), in cooperation with Talae’ Al-Amal Secondary School, organised a lecture on how to mitigate the seismic risks.

The School Activity Coordinator opened the lecture and welcomed Dr. Jalal Dabbeek, Director of the Centre and Vice President of the National Agency for Disaster Risks Mitigation, and thanked him for giving the lecture for 250 students and teacher .

Dr. Dabbeek introduced the main elements of the seismic Risk Mitigation Project in Palestine (SASPARM Project). He went on to highlight the key elements controlling Risk Assessment and Risk Management, causes of earthquakes, seismicity and seismic activity in Palestine and neighbouring areas; and the possibility of future earthquakes in the area.

Dr. Dabbeek talked about a number of common building patterns in Palestine which increased the seismic vulnerability. He also talked about the importance and preparation and the of risk maps, conducting a quick assessment of the level of damage of buildings and infrastructure.

Finally, Dr. Dabbeek gave an overview of prevention procedures and preparation (before, during, and after earthquakes).
The lecture closed with a question and answer session where students and teacher asked Dr. Dabbeek pertinent questions.
