Special issue on "Systemic risk, cascading disasters and compound events"
In recent years it has become increasingly clear that the nature of disaster risk is changing. Systemic challenges require a paradigm shift in how we approach emergency management, disaster reduction and resilience. For example, events such as the Covid-19 pandemic have highlighted the interconnected nature of society and the cascading effects of failures in life-support systems. Technological problems and electricity blackouts such as that which occurred in Texas in January 2021 have disrupted organizations and critical functions, as well as people’s lives. Climate change exacerbates the potential for extreme events to occur concurrently with one another. This special issue explores the complexity of these interdependencies. It adopts a network-based cross-disciplinary approach in order to expand our understanding of both the theoretical and practical implications of the topic. The themes covered include emergency management and disaster preparedness, operational continuity, and organizational and societal resilience.
