UK allocates additional UKL 5 million to IOM for shelter and flood preparedness in Pakistan’s Sindh
The UK Department for International Development (DFID) has allocated an additional UKL 5 million to IOM to provide shelter support to flood-affected people in Sindh province.
The funds will also support preparedness activities for the upcoming monsoon season and ensure that IOM’s post-2011 flood shelter rehabilitation programme will continue.
The shelter programme has included support for the distribution of DFID-supplied shelter and non-food relief item (NFI) kits through NGOs to 15,000 families, and a pilot programme reviewing various types of shelter indigenous to the area.
The project extension will help an additional 10,000 vulnerable households to rebuild shelters in the most severely flood-affected districts of Mirpur Khas, Umerkot, Tharparkar and Tando Allah Yar.
The programme focuses on cash support for vulnerable households and provision of technical training, taking into account local construction practices, materials and culture. It allows families to take charge of reconstruction and to select the model of house that they prefer, including whatever risk reducing technology they can afford.
“Our efforts to recover from last year’s floods have been really boosted by IOM’s training and cash to help us rebuild,” says Raheema a resident of Tharparker and a beneficiary of the programme. She lives on a monthly income of less than USD 75 and has seven children, including a disabled son.
The new funds will also enable IOM to prepare for disaster situations in the coming months. In addition to prepositioning shelter/NFI stocks for 16,000 families, IOM will support existing coordination arrangements and capacity building of local NGO partners.
“After two years of consecutive flooding, many families in Sindh still live in damaged or temporary shelters. That is why the UK is working in partnership with IOM to build flood-resistant, permanent shelter for thousands of families, and to help repair the homes of tens of thousands more. We are also working with IOM to pre-position emergency items in preparation for future disasters,” said Bob Leverington, Head of DFID in Islamabad.
