When land is degraded, its people and their prospects are degraded too
Investing in sustainable land management could help boost political, economic and climatic resilience in poor countries, writes Monique Barbut, executive secretary of the UN convention to combat desertification in The Guardian. In a recent meeting heads of 48 least developed countries identified the following areas to boost the resilience of their economies: reorienting policies for agriculture, rural and infrastructure development, and for private investment; building small and medium-sized enterprises; diversifying commodities; investing in women and youth, and physical infrastructure; and mobilising their diaspora communities.
