The 2018 Woolsey Fire: a catalyst for change
Following the Woolsey Fire, it was apparent a new era of regular large-scale Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fires was upon us (the new normal). This report includes a detailed roadmap to create a safe and thriving community living in the Wildland Urban Interface amid a changing climate. Over 100 semi-structured interviews of individuals directly impacted by the Woolsey Fire were conducted using approved Institutional Review Board guidelines. Multiple forums and community meetings also contributed to the wider contextual information gathering process along with government agencies, homeowner associations, volunteer organizations, and businesses. The authors' discoveries were enlightening as we reviewed both the response to the fire and the need for a new and sustainable path to resiliency. The report is written in support of the motivators, individuals, neighbourhoods, and communities across the public and private sector that are willing to face the challenge and implement positive change.
