Adapting to climate risks and extreme weather: a guide for mining and minerals industry professionals
This guide has been designed to provide general information about the nature of extreme weather events, and some specific examples of how unexpectedly severe flooding, storm, drought, high temperature and bushfire events have affected mining and mineral processing operations in Australia. The guide is comprised of nine sections: (i) section one introduces the guide and how to use it; (ii) section two explains how risks are changing due to a changing climate; (iii) section three discusses flooding and storms, and presents case studies from four Australian mines; (iv) section four discusses the challenge of maintaining abandoned mines during flooding; (v) section five discusses drought in Australia, listing three case studies; (vi) section six explains how to minimize environmental impacts from mine water through adaptation against drought and flood; (vii) section seven discusses health risks associated with increased temperatures; (viii) section eight presents guidance on risk assessment and adaptive planning; and (ix) section nine offers a list of additional resources relevant to topics covered in the case studies.
