The annual Tibetan school shake-out
April 2010, 105th anniversary of the 1905 Kangra earthquake:
This paper reports on the annual drill aimed at getting Tibetan schools situated in high earthquake hazard zones on to the path of preparedness. It also serves as a token way of keeping the memory of the Kangra earthquake (one of the most fatal earthquakes known in the history of India) alive. It intends to show the importance of remembering past events in order to be prepared for the future.
The paper describes the annual event organized in Tibetan schools across India in various States (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu Kashmir, Delhi, Meghalaya and West Bengal), which calls over 16,000 students to do the Drop, Cover & Hold on in their schools and to follow their evacuation route to their designated open spaces.
