Assessment and proposals for uranium production legacy sites in Central Asia: an international approach
This report provides assessments of the risks posed by uranium mining and milling activities in the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The report provides a technical baseline and common understanding of regional and site-specific issues. It is hoped that this document will serve as a basis for identifying, prioritizing and coordinating the necessary activities to make these sites safe for the population and the environment around them.
The assessment and evaluations are based upon the International Basic Safety Standards for Protection Against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources (Safety Series No.115), the Safety Guides on Occupational Radiation Protection in the Mining and Processing of Raw Materials (IAEA Safety Standard Series No. RS.-G-1.6), and Management of Radioactive Waste from the Mining and Milling of Ores (IAEA Safety Standards Series No. WS-G-1.2).
