Breach of trust: People’s experiences of the Pakistan floods and their aftermath, July 2010 – July 2011
This book highlights the experience of those who survived the flood and the community activists who led the response on the ground. As far as possible the book draws upon the words of these survivors and activists, one year on from the 2010 floods. Those affected by flood reported that assistance delivered by NGOs reached eligible beneficiaries, while the politicization of government assistance rendered it largely irrelevant to the needs. The vulnerability analysis used by the humanitarian community to understand disasters sees a disaster as the combination of hazard and vulnerability. Hazards are external and often natural phenomena, such as earthquakes. Vulnerabilities are social and express the way in which communities are resilient. This book covers reasons and analysis of 2010 super floods and numerous case studies of the affected people.
