Business risk assessment and the management of climate change impacts: twelve Philippines cities
This study looks thirty years into the future of twelve major Philippine cities: Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo , Cagayan de Oro, Dagupan, Laoag, Zamboanga , Angeles, Batangas, Naga and Tacloban, using three vector analysis: climate/environmental exposure, socio-economic sensitivity and adaptive capacity. It builds on a landmark study entitled 'The Coral Triangle and climate change: ecosystems, people and societies at risk', which spells out six likely climate scenarios for this region: (i) El Niño Southern Oscillation Events (ENSO); (ii) sea surface temperature rise; (iii) ocean acidification; (iv) sea level rise; (v) tropical cyclones; and (vi) rainfall, river flow and flooding.
The study intends to provide a comprehensive grasp of likely future trends that (a) build on existing climate studies while (b) distilling city-specific socioeconomic in formation, as well as (c) drawing from experiences of local stakeholders. The Business risk assessment and the management of climate change impacts project is a partnership between WWF-Philippines and BPI Foundation aimed at helping city planners and decision-makers assess climate change impacts, identify opportunities and decide on a sustainability strategy, site-specific intervention and standards of next practice that will allow the city to retain economic viability and respond more competitively in a climate-defined future.
