Catastrophic natural disasters and economic growth
IDB working paper series no. IDB-WP-183:
This paper analyses the links between natural disasters and economic growth. It examines the short and long-run average causal impact of catastrophic natural disasters on economic growth by combining information from comparative case studies. It finds out that only extremely large disasters have a negative effect on output, both in the short and long run. Section 1 introduces the study, section 2 presents the empirical methodology, and section 3 describes the data. Results are discussed in Section 4 and conclusions follow.
