City and building designers, and climate adaptation
This paper presents results from a climate adaptation research project undertaken in Toulouse (France) in 2015. While city and building designers could be pivotal actors, they have yet to fully take on this role. Research can support adaptation action through greater collaboration with practitioners and a better understanding of their knowledge and practices.
The study argues the following:
- providing city and building designers with holistic and operational information on the four catalysts for climate action is a promising way to bridge the gap between research in climate adaptation and practice;
- increased leverage stemming from political, economic, and regulatory contexts more inclined towards climate adaptation could help professionals even more; and
- improving the education and training of professionals by organising, for instance, specialised design games and seminars, could heighten their awareness, confidence, and will in addressing climate change.
