Climate risk and adaptation country profile: Nepal
This Country Profile is part of a series of 49 priority country briefs developed by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) and the Global Support Program of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF). The profile synthesizes most relevant data and information for Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation to Climate Change and is designed as a quick reference source for development practitioners to better integrate climate resilience in development planning and operations.
Nepal’s varied topography and social vulnerability make the country particularly susceptible to geological and climate-related disasters. A general lack of effective response mechanisms and strategies for dealing with natural disasters exacerbates this vulnerability. Erratic weather patterns projected in climate models may exacerbate these problems in years to come. Nepal has implemented and is designing a suite of active policies to address the underlying causes of vulnerability in the country, including addressing issues of food security, poverty reduction, and, more recently, environmental degradation.
