Disaster proofing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
Enhancing resilience and accelerating achievements of MDGs and HFA implementation in Asia and the Pacific region by 2015:
This brochure clearly shows how disaster can set back each of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and how disaster risk reduction can help achieve the Goals. Through disaster proof MDGs, it aims to create the "virtuous circle" by reinforcing mutual synergy between the MDGs and the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) which is now in its mid-way through 2015.
It builds upon the recent 65th session of the General Assembly on the MDGs, held in New York from 20 to 22 September 2010, which acknowledged that "disaster risk reduction and increasing resilience to all types of natural hazard in developing countries can have multiplier effects and accelerate achievement of the MDGs, in line with the HFA"; upon the 2nd and 3rd Asian Ministerial Conferences on Disaster Risk Reduction; as well as upon the growing awareness that hard-won development gains are wiped away by "natural disasters" gained from the shadow of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, the multiple disasters of 2009 including Cyclone Ketsana and earthquake in Padang, and the series of devastations in Haiti, Chile and Pakistan.
