Disaster risk awareness and preparedness of the EU population: Bulgaria
The survey on disaster risk awareness in Bulgaria highlights that citizens feel most vulnerable to floods (34%), followed by extreme weather events (28%). While Bulgarians generally trust public authorities for disaster risk information, there is a noticeable gap in accessing this information compared to the EU average. Many rely on informal sources like family, friends, and social media, indicating a need for more structured and clear communication strategies. Although Bulgarians feel confident in their ability to cope with disasters through preparation, many still feel underprepared and seek more information to improve their readiness. There is a strong demand for additional guidance, as few citizens report being encouraged by emergency services to engage in training or preparedness activities. This gap between perceived and actual preparedness points to the need for more proactive communication and training efforts to enhance disaster readiness.
This survey assesses the awareness of EU citizens about the disaster risks that could affect them, their preparedness to face various disaster risk scenarios, and the reliance they place on a range of actors in disaster situations. The survey also explores the engagement of EU citizens in voluntary work to increase disaster resilience.
