Disaster risk awareness and preparedness of the EU population: Cyprus
The survey on disaster risk awareness and preparedness in Cyprus shows that citizens feel most vulnerable to wildfires and forest fires (47%), followed by extreme weather events (41%) and mass population displacement in emergencies. Cypriots take more disaster preparedness measures than the average European level. They also tend to trust public authorities and emergency services for disaster-related information, reflecting high confidence in these institutions. However, despite this trust, there is a noticeable gap between risk awareness and actual preparedness actions, highlighting the need for more effective communication and accessible resources to improve readiness. Compared to the rest of the EU, Cyprus shows similar trends in risk perception but has a slightly lower rate of preparedness actions and less confidence in preparedness, reflecting a common regional challenge in translating awareness into action.
This survey assesses the awareness of EU citizens about the disaster risks that could affect them, their preparedness to face various disaster risk scenarios, and the reliance they place on a range of actors in disaster situations. The survey also explores the engagement of EU citizens in voluntary work to increase disaster resilience.
