Disaster risk awareness and preparedness of the EU population: Finland
The survey on disaster risk awareness in Finland reveals that citizens feel most vulnerable to human health emergencies (51%), followed by critical infrastructure disruptions (46%) and cybersecurity threats (41%). Notably, significantly more Finns perceive themselves as vulnerable to disasters compared to other EU residents, particularly in these areas where the differences are striking. Finns also demonstrate a much higher level of disaster risk awareness and show overwhelming trust in information from public authorities and emergency services. Their primary sources of information are national and local media, as well as local or national authorities and emergency management services, reflecting a strong reliance on authoritative sources. Additionally, Finns exhibit an exceptionally high level of disaster preparedness. Nearly 100% of respondents express full trust in emergency services and authorities in the event of a disaster, showcasing their remarkable confidence in these institutions.
This serial survey assesses the awareness of EU citizens about the disaster risks that could affect them, their preparedness to face various disaster risk scenarios, and the reliance they place on a range of actors in disaster situations. The survey also explores the engagement of EU citizens in voluntary work to increase disaster resilience.
