Disaster risk awareness and preparedness of the EU population: Ireland
The survey on disaster risk awareness in Ireland reveals that citizens feel most vulnerable to floods (36%), followed by cybersecurity threats (30%) and extreme weather events (30%). Although Irish citizens demonstrate an average level of disaster risk awareness compared to other EU countries, their preparedness is relatively lacking. However, they have higher trust and expectations of public authorities. Their main sources of information are national media, social media, and family or friends, indicating a reliance on less formal channels for accessing information. This suggests that while trust in authorities is strong, more formal and accessible preparedness resources are needed.
This serial survey assesses the awareness of EU citizens about the disaster risks that could affect them, their preparedness to face various disaster risk scenarios, and the reliance they place on a range of actors in disaster situations. The survey also explores the engagement of EU citizens in voluntary work to increase disaster resilience.
