Disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation: case studies from South and Southeast Asia
Source No. 14/2010:
This publication provides a compilation of joint papers focusing on disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA). It compiles case studies and conceptual discussion papers intending to trigger new approaches, scientific discussions and increased attention on exisiting DRR and CCA issues in South and Southeast Asia.
The introductory chapter provides the background and an overview of DRR and climate change issues globally, and in South and Southeast Asia specifically. Subsequent papers provide various case studies and conceptual discussions, which will be wrapped up in the final chapter. The ideas and topics of the papers focus on a number of common themes to be addressed in DRR and CCA: (i) sustainable adaptation; (ii) community participation in planning and managing DRR and CCA; (iii) vulnerability and risk assessment methods for adaptation planning; (iv) good governance and capacity-building; and (v) linking DRR and CCA.
The publication is the outcome of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)/UNU-EHS International PhD Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation in Context of South and Southeast Asia, held from 23 until 25 November 2009 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The workshop was organized by UNU-EHS and the Research Centre for Disasters, Yogyakarta (PSBA-UGM), and funded by DAAD as part of the DAAD Catastrophes Prevention, Crisis Management and Conflict Prevention Special Programme (CCC-Tsunami).
