This document describes Cordaid's experience in how its Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction programme worked out before and during the eruption of Mount Merapi in Indonesia, October 2010. Part one of two, it describes how the DRR forums of affected villages took care of evacuation, distribution of aid, well being of evacuees and their hosts and coordination of the safeguarding of assets in the abandoned villages. It targets scientists, NGOs and anyone interested in community managed disaster risk reduction or the disaster event.
