Ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation: Evidence from two sites in Bangladesh
This research looks at two components of effective ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation (EbA): ecosystem resilience and the maintenance of ecosystem services. It assesses EbA effectiveness in terms of how such approaches support community adaptive capacity and resilience at two sites in Bangladesh: Chanda Beel wetland and Balukhali Village in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Results show that the many diverse natural resources available and utilised at each site have increased local adaptive capacity, especially for poorer households.
The paper identifies the contribution of the below natural resources to adaptive capacity building or vulnerability reduction (p. 6-14):
- ecosystems:
- hills
- lake
- agricultural land
- wetland
- flora:
- trees and plants
- grass
- bamboo
- fauna:
- domesticated ducks
- fish culture
- wild birds
