The effects of climate change: an increase in coastal flood damage in Northern Europe
This study states that climate change will lead to more frequent and intense winter storms in Europe. Coupled with rising sea-levels, intensifying storms increase coastal flood damage in the long-term. It states that for the affected countries these scenarios mean ensuring that the impacts of climate change are integrated systematically into risk assessment and risk management processes. It stresses that adaptation through adequate sea defences and the management of the residual risk is essential. It goes on to recommend that while the insurance industry is an important contributor to the absorption of volatile risk it will not be able to address the challenges of climate change alone and that public-private partnership will be indispensable. It concludes highlighting that Swiss Re continues to develop alternative forms of risk transfer to enable the transfer of existing and emerging risk.
This study is the conclusion drawn from research conducted by Swiss Re together with the University of Berne in Switzerland.
