Evaluating the association between heatwave vulnerability index and related deaths in Australia
This study investigated the relationship between the heatwave vulnerability index (HVI) and the risk of heatwave-related deaths across the country. The findings indicate a positive association between HVI (β: 0.18, 95% CI: 0.08-0.27) and an increased percentage of heatwave-related deaths across capital cities.
A unit increase in HVI was associated with a higher risk of mortality during severe heatwave days (β: 0.39, 95% CI: 0.05-0.74) compared to low-intensity heatwave days (β: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.09-0.32). Additionally, the HVI component factor comprising low education, low income, a low number of healthcare professionals, and high diabetes prevalence was strongly associated with all heatwave-related deaths in capital cities.
