Flood risk perception, disaster preparedness and response in flood-prone urban communities of Rivers State
This study aimed at exploring the perception on flood risk and ascertaining the determinants of disaster preparedness among residents in flood-prone urban communities. Descriptive statistics and discriminant regression model were employed on primary data collected from 240 urban households across five communities at risk of flooding in the study area.
Important implications arising from the study are that tackling the challenges (e.g. poorly constructed drainage and unplanned building of structures) increasing the vulnerability of the people or area to flooding will enhance the adaptive capacity of the households. Also, creating awareness on disaster risk helps to inform the individuals' perception of the risk and in turn, their disaster preparedness behaviours and subsequently building resilience.
