Growth, productive employment and decent work in the Least Developed Countries
This study addresses a number of key issues in growth and development across the three main regions of Africa, Asia and the Island countries, also highlighting challenges and opportunities for structural changes, job creation and poverty eradication. It considers the implications of climate change on agriculture sector and the need for communities and persons to adapt to climate change and reduce the immediate negative impacts on their lives. It also presents some innovations in Public Employment Programmes pertaining to the protection of households and communities against external shocks such as floods or droughts.
The overall study examines the relationship between GDP growth, employment and decent work in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) within a longer term perspective but focusing on the last decade. It has been prepared for the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries to be held in Istanbul from 9-13 May, 2011, which will seek to promote a 10-year programme for food security, decent work, disaster risk reduction, climate resilience and clean energy growth in the 48 LDCs.
