Facing the highest risk are regions experiencing record-breaking heatwaves in terms of intensity or duration, as well as those previously unaccustomed to extreme temperatures. Developing and least developed countries especially are highly vulnerable due to higher population densities, limited resources and lower socio-economic capabilities. Extreme heat is a major stressor for communities worldwide, most critically impacting the food-water-energy nexus and public health. Leveraging local knowledge can play a major role in building community-level resilience.
