This report describes country’s disaster risks and natural hazards, such as cyclone, earthquake, volcano, landslide and tsunami, and presents institutional and legal framework for disaster management in Japan.

The report highlights the major activities and accomplishments in disaster reduction during the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) including improved forecasting and warning systems and strengthened disaster public awareness and preparedness.

The publication outlines current efforts and challenges in disaster reduction and sets out priorities and recommendations for future activities. It is a major reporting document on country’s progress and achievements in disaster reduction at the end of IDNDR.
