Local development and MDGs: what role for local governments?
Localizing the MDGs:
This paper aims to outline the key policy issues that underlie the debate over local development and the role that local governments can play in accelerating progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It asserts that there are at least 6 key areas in which local governments have a strong comparative advantage to deliver on both local and national objectives, including building climate change resilience and the support needed support to prepare for droughts, floods, and rising sea levels.
The paper puts forward some of the key questions that will be discussed at the Global Forum on Local Development (Kampala, 4–6 October 2010).
