Mainstreaming climate risk into development: Challenges and recommendations
The brief explains Sri Lanka’s vulnerability to climate-induced weather events and the challenges in key sectors, namely, energy, water, agriculture, livestock, fisheries, tourism, and manufacturing. It presents the major impediments in achieving global and national commitments, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 14.5% by 2030 and achieving a net zero target by 2050, and discusses the significance of increasing investment in adaptation strategies.
The strategic recommendations suggested in this policy brief are identified as per the NDC targets of the country including:
- Provide assistance to enhance the legal and institutional frameworks and implementation capacities of provincial councils for climate change.
- Enforce policy and regulatory frameworks through good governance.
- Strengthen data sharing and information management systems for the decision-making process
- Scale up climate-smart agricultural practices to enhance water and food security
- Develop strategic conceptual ideas for blending climate change mitigation and adaptation funding with global partners.
