Many strong voices: turning vulnerability into strength
This publication intends to promote the well-being, security, and sustainability of coastal communities in the Arctic and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) by bringing these regions together to take action on climate change mitigation and adaptation, and to tell their stories to the world. It considers the Arctic and SIDS as critical testing grounds for the ideas and programmes that aim to strengthen the adaptive capacities of human societies confronting climate change, and presents lessons learned to support policy development at local, regional, and international levels. It intends to provide decision-makers in the two regions with the knowledge to safeguard and strengthen vulnerable social, economic, and natural systems.
The booklet highlights the work of Many Strong Voices (MSV), outlines some of the latest science trends and highlights climate-related impacts now being experienced by its members. Personal narratives and photographs from individuals in MSV countries feature prominently. Innovative maps and illustrations created for the booklet by UNEP GRID-Arendal help to visualize climate change issues in these regions as never before.
