This Act seeks to define a legal framework towards making Mauritius a climate-change resilient, and low emission, country. The document defines the tasks and functions of several institutions regarding Climate Change governance. The Interministerial council on Climate Change, defined in Part II, is in charge of setting national objectives, goals and targets with a view to making Mauritius a climate change-resilient and low emission country.
The Act:
- Defines the Interministerial Council on Climate Change, which is in charge of setting national objectives, goals and targets with a view to making Mauritius a climate change-resilient and low emission country.
- Establishes the responsibility of the Department of Climate Change to: promote adaptation and mitigation measures to address climate change in relevant sectors; develop and coordinate policies, projects, strategies, programmes and action plans to address the adverse effects of climate change and oversee their implementation by relevant stakeholders;
- Regulates the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan, National Climate Change Mitigation Strategy and Action Plan and National Inventory Report;
- Defines the National Implementing Entity and enforcement of the Act.
