Mitigating disasters: a promising start

This article recalls the history of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) and its origins at the last World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, just weeks after the Indian Ocean tsunami. It reports on the history, progress of the HFA to date, and some of disaster risk reduction's leaders' thoughts for the future. It summarizes some of the 75 consultations organized by UNISDR in preparation for the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, addressing the succession of the Hyogo Framework, which will reach its closure in 2015.
