NKUA Newsletter #29: The 6 February 2023 #Turkey-Syria Earthquakes
The newsletter of Environmental Disasters & Crises Management Strategies is a non-periodic publication of the Post-graduate Studies Program “Environmental Disasters & Crises Management Strategies" of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, issued after significant events for the immediate information of the scientific community and the general public. The publication includes also scientific data from various research teams from universities, organizations and research institutes.
Issue Nr 19 entitled "The 6 February 2023 #Turkey-Syria Earthquakes" is the outcome of a fruitful collaboration and knowledge sharing between geologists, civil engineers, geographers and oceanographers, interested in mapping and monitoring the 6 February 2023 earthquakes (Mw=7.8 and Mw=7.5) along the East Anatolian Fault System in Turkey and their effects. It comprises:
- the brief review of the geology, the active tectonics in the earthquake-affected area and the historical and the recent seismicity with all known historical and recent earthquakes in the East Anatolian fault system based on the existing literature,
- the presentation of seismotectonic information for the affected area including the seismotectonic context, the preliminary locations of epicenters and the focal mechanisms of the mainshock and the aftershock sequence, the spatiotemporal evolution of the foreshock-aftershock sequence and the compilation of shakemaps,
- the presentation of the environmental effects triggered by the earthquakes derived from post-earthquake field surveys conducted shortly after the earthquakes (6-11 February) by the scientific team of the NKUA comprising Prof. Em. Panayotis Carydis, Prof. Dr. Efthymios Lekkas, Assoc. Prof. Em. Vassilakis. Dr. Spyridon Mavroulis and MSc Ioannis Argyropoulos.
- the presentation of damage to buildings and infrastructures conducted by the scientific team of the NKUA.
- the most important results of post-event field surveys on the earthquake impact on the natural environment and the building stock conducted in the earthquake-affected area and published in various sources cited in each case.
- the disaster management and especially the actions during the emergency response including mainly search and rescue (SAR) operations in the earthquake-affected area conducted by several SAR teams worldwide.
- the risk factors and the potential for emergence of infectious diseases in the affected area.
