Typhoon Xangsane entered Viet Nam on 27 September 2006, packing stong winds over 137 km/h and rain that cut power and caused widespread devastation, and disruption. An estimated 300,000 people were evacuated from Viet Nam's central coastal provinces to safer locations. About 1.3 million people were reported as affected by the resulting flooding in the days afler Xangsane hit Viet Nam. The typhoon's fierce winds and rain destroyed or damaged thousands of homes when it slammed into Viet Nam's central coast. A strong house is an imporlant asset that provides some economic stability. This case study is about how to help poor families protect their homes when facing typhoons and floods.
