The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan: implications for East Asia

This update analyses the tragic earthquake on March 11 in Japan with a magnitude 9 on the Richter scale and the subsequent tsunami as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers posed by natural hazards. It demonstrates the Japanese people's strength and resilience as they struggle to deal with this crisis and assesses the possible impacts of the uncertainties and challenges posed by the unfolding issue of nuclear radiation in Japan: (i) on the Japanese economy; (ii) on developing East Asia; (iii) through trade; and (iv) through finance, in comparison to the damage caused by the 6.9 magnitude Kobe earthquake in 1995.
