The Republic of Korea’s enhanced update of its first nationally determined contribution
The Republic of Korea declared to move towards the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 in December 2020 and has finalized its 2050 carbon-neutrality scenarios as a follow-up measure. The enhanced update of the first NDC of the Republic of Korea is set at the most ambitious level possible to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 despite the country’s manufacturing-oriented industry structure. This enhanced update of its first NDC falls in line with the declaration.
Along with mitigation efforts, the Republic of Korea has been making various efforts to adapt to climate change. The 3rd National Climate Change Adaptation Plan was drawn up to include three key policy pillars: i) improving climate resilience, ii) strengthening monitoring, forecasting and assessment and iii) mainstreaming adaptation in all corners of society.
