Given their vital role in health care at community and national levels, hospitals must continue to function before, during and following an emergency or disaster. The Resilient Hospital initiative promotes an all-hazard approach in order to take account of the wide range of hazards that affect the resiliency of hospitals, staff and patients and that may lead to emergencies and disasters requiring a health response. Hospitals need a wide support system to be able to fulfill their roles in health service delivery. This initiative is intended to ensure the functionality of hospitals as a core element of a broader health and societal system for managing the risks of emergencies and disasters.

The project also supports the Ministry of Health’s “Vision for Health” which mandates the development of safe healthcare system. It is in line with the 2017 National Patient Safety Goals, which was envisioned in the decree from the Malaysian Cabinet. The purpose is to improve patient safety. It focuses on problems in health care safety and how to solve them. The programs and projects also build upon international frameworks and national legislation, addressing the gaps within the issues of hospitals’ readiness in facing challenges during and after the event of disaster.

In line with the DRR objectives in improving the hospital’s disaster preparedness and early warning systems through the implementation of DRM, this training conducted awareness-raising workshops and facilitated and process in strengthening the hospitals’ disaster management committee structure.
