In 2003 the Joint Research Centre performed a survey of mapping practices in eleven countries for eight major hazards.  Under the 5FP project experts from the PECO countries agreed on ten priority hazards as important concerns for the region, as follows: Floods, technological hazards, industrial installations, forest fires, transport of dangerous goods, storms, contaminated lands, landslides, pipelines, earthquakes, and oil-shale mining.  The aim of this activity was to examine the existing situation, in each surveyed country for mapping of priority natural and technological hazards, compare methodologies used in the different countries for hazard to inform guidelines for establishing compatible national mapping systems, and provide a basis for defining a pilot project that would test feasibility of different approaches to harmonizing aspects of mapping practices in regard to specific hazards.  This report looks specifically at the risk of earthquakes in these eleven countries, different methodologies of earthquake risk mapping, and the potential implications and usage of these maps.
